First they were carved to shape. Most of the braces in this kit were precarved, just not the x braces. Some sample x braces from a dreadnought kit were provided to show what the profile looked like.
Once carved and sanded, they were notched to allow the overlap for the x.
Under the rods in the deck for clamping... As before the clamps in the pics aren't clamping anything, just keeping the angle iron from sliding around. The actual clamping pressure comes from the rods.
