After a long hiatus waiting for the finish to cure, I was able to get some more work on this done.
I started with the neck, mostly because the flat parts on it (headstock and heel cap), would be easier to fix in case I screwed it up. Turns out that was a wise decision because I sanded through the finish on the headstock chasing a low spot.
The back of the neck turned out fine since I just wanted a satin finish on it. I dry sanded with 600 and 800 and done. I'll put pics of the neck up once I get the headstock redone.
For the body, I went extra careful to avoid sanding through the finish. I used 800 dry to knock the fuzz off, then wet sanded with 1200, 1500, and 2000. I've never wet sanded before so I didn't really know what I was doing, but as far as I can tell, I didn't mess anything up.
Since the blogger app tends to post pics in a random order, the pics on the green towel are after dry sanding and the pics on the purple towel are after wet sanding.
I was hoping to stop after wet sanding, but it is not as glossy as I was hoping. Looks like I'm going to have to get some polishing compound and buffing equip.
