I started by clamping the tuners with a wood shim to keep them flush with the top while I marked the position of the holes.
The position was marked by tapping an awl to make a little starter hole. The starter holes were drilled out to be pilot holes on the drill press. I used a strip of tape on the drill bit to keep from drilling through into the slot on the slot head.
Then the tuners went back in and screwed in place.
