Got some work done profiling the neck.
I cut down the thickness of the neck with a spoke shave. The setup I had with the neck mounted on a dummy block in the vise was kind of bouncy causing the shave to dig into the wood, so I wound up doing most of the work with 80 grit sandpaper.
I left the neck about 1/10 inch thicker than my D-15. I figure it would be better to start off a too thick than too thin. I can always take more off later if I don't like it.
As delivered in the kit, the neck had a diamond volute on the back in the transition from fingerboard to headstock. The volute serves a mechanical purpose in strengthening this transition area. Due to the direction of the wood grain, this is actually a very weak part on the guitar. The extra thickness from the volute adds strength there.
That's great and all, but I didn't like the sharp angles of the diamond. So I sanded it down to a cone shape while still keeping much of the material intact.
