The directions called for just sanding with a sanding block, but there was a lot of material sticking up, so I decided to cut it down a bit first.

The knife will get it a lot shorter, but it will be jagged. Sanding is still needed. I started with a small piece of sandpaper rolled up so that I could concentrate on the rosette, and leave the wood as untouched as possible.

Once I got it down as far as possible with the sandpaper roll, I level sanded the rosette with the top with a small sanding block (which is absent from the following pic, but is in the first one in this post).
