Not trimming the sides closer earlier turned out not to be a big deal. The extra top material was easily trimmed off with a hand plane most of the way around. It's important to stay on the correct side of the grain here; it would be easy to split the wood going the wrong way.

For the waist, which was a concave curve, the plane wouldn't work. An X-acto knife did well here.
