Uke kit

Ok, so this is the first real post in the blog.

For Father's Day, my lovely bride got me a Ukulele kit from StewMac.

Ultimately I'd like to build a guitar from a kit, and this uke kit is a way to get my feet wet without getting too complicated from the beginning. Make sure it's going to be something I can stick with. FK from HCAG, if you're reading this, it's all your fault! ;^)

Back to the uke... The kit arrived yesterday. Well packaged, and even included some thick rubber bands to assist in the build that I was not expecting.

I did notice one problem though. There was a bit of the edge the lower bout missing from the back piece. I'm not sure I would be able to squeeze the sides in enough to keep the void from appearing in the back of the finished uke. I sent an email to customer service at StewMac about the problem, and they're shipping me a new back piece. So far, +1 for service with them.

This uke won't be modeled after anything in particular, so I'll give it a fairly generic model number. I'm thinking U1-AM.

I think I might swap out the tuners. The traditional friction pegs for ukes never really floated my boat. Grover makes some nice looking open back guitar style tuners for ukes that are pretty cheap. I'll probably wait to make sure this isn't going to implode before I buy any more parts though.

I'm still assessing what I'm going to need in terms of supplies & tools, so there's no progress to mention as of yet.

Update: I thought it was just a pile of thick rubber bands. It's actually two GINORMOUS rubber bands.

Cool.
